Expert Tips for Properly Storing a Buttercream Frosted Cake

Buttercream frosting is one of the most popular and delicious frostings for cakes. It’s soft, creamy, and sweet flavor makes it a perfect topping for cakes of all kinds. However, storing a buttercream frosted cake can be tricky because you don’t want your frosting to melt or spoil.

There are several ways you can store your buttercream frosted cake depending on how long you need it stored.

Short Term Storage (Up To 24 Hours)

If you plan on serving your cake within 24 hours after baking and decorating, no special preparation is required other than ensuring that any decoration (such as fondant) has set completely before moving or wrapping them up in a box lined with parchment paper.

Then simply place your boxed-up completed baked goods into an area free from direct sunlight at room temperature but ideally where cooler temperatures prevail like near AC vents etc

Avoid placing edible flowers directly onto moist icing as this will cause browning faster than usual even if refrigerated overnight beforehand!

Long-Term Storage (More Than 24 Hours)

If planning ahead of time; then wrap the cake with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, place it in an airtight container and refrigerate. However, if your cake has any decorations such as fondant, don’t cover them in plastic wrap as they will stick to it. You can instead cover the cake loosely with a parchment paper or aluminum foil.

If you are storing for more than 24 hours but less than three days then store the wrapped up buttercream frosted cakes inside of fridge so that their humidity levels remain controlled.


Freezing your buttercream frosted cake is a great way to store it for longer periods of time – up to one month! To do this:

1. Cool down your baked goods completely.
2. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap first and make sure all air pockets are removed before wrapping again with foil.
3. Place the wrapped-up box into freezer until frozen solid (should take around 2-4 hours)
4. Remove from freezer just prior to serving by removing both layers of packaging and allowing cakes time to come back down close enough room temperature before unwrapping fully exposing its frosting surface once again!
