Effective Ways to Store Cilantro for Extended Freshness

Cilantro is an herb that is commonly used in many dishes around the world, particularly in Mexican and Asian cuisine. Known for its fresh, citrusy flavor and aroma, cilantro is often added to salads, sauces, soups and stews to enhance their taste.

However, like most herbs, cilantro does not last very long once it has been cut from the plant. To ensure that your cilantro stays fresh for as long as possible, here are some tips on how to store it properly:

1. Wash the Cilantro

The first step in storing cilantro is to wash it thoroughly under cold running water. This will help remove any dirt or debris that may be stuck to the leaves or stems. After washing it gently with water leave it aside so that excess moisture dries out before storage.

2. Trim the Stems

Once you’ve washed your cilantro carefully pick away any wilted or discolored leaves and trim about ½ inch off of each stem’s base before placing them into a jar filled with cool water.

5. Change Water Daily

If storing in water, change the liquid every day or whenever you notice that it has become cloudy.

Tap water can sometimes contain chlorine or other chemicals that may cause cilantro leaves to wilt faster so use either bottled or filtered water.
